Orchestration
Apr. 27th, 2025 09:55 amWe had the Memphis Concrète Scrap Metal Orchestra rehearsal early yesterday. It went well! This time I had those sound examples to play and I think that helped a lot. We made it through practicing all the "pulses" and then started on a couple of the "cues" before we were done. This was the start of the true test! The "pulses" are all parts where everyone plays the same thing. The "cues" are where things start getting really wacky. These parts have everyone starting playing the same thing, but all the time signatures are different so after the first iteration they get out of sync. So you have people playing three different parts in three different time signatures at the same time. But I think they were starting to get it! (That's what my complex system of metronomes is for, but we were finally using it for the first time.) Anyway, pretty happy with how things were going! Had a couple people who weren't able to make it to the first practice show up so nice to see some more faces (though down one, but that's the nature of working with a whole bunch of people). Later at night Mary Beth and I went to a show at an art gallery downtown. Our upstairs neighbor Gabriel had an ep release show for his project Melinda, which at least live has a full band (all the members of General Labor are in it, both of them, and others). It started with Late Night Cardigan playing. Then it was Optic Sink. And Melinda played last. Infinity Stairs was doing visual projections. It was a fun show. Lots of people were there so talked to a few of them.
