Orchids and Jazz

Had a very interesting day yesterday. In the earlier part of the afternoon, Mary Beth and I joined Molly as she went to a meeting of the Memphis Orchid Society. They were having a presentation on scent and Mary Beth is very into that. Anyway, we get there and I see my old coworker Alex, he's technically still a coworker but for a while he's been on a team that I don't cross paths with at all, but at one point he was my manager. Then it turns out he's not only a member but he's the current president of the orchid society! Anyway, small world or something like that, and it was good to see him and talk a little bit. Anyway, so that was all interesting and a good time. A little later in the evening Mary Beth and I went up to The Cove for their jazz night as David Collins was playing and it was his last show in town before he moves away! We hadn't been to The Cove in forever. They have this newer thing (probably been doing it for a long time, but new-to-us) where they just have these dogs wandering around the bar/restaurant. It's kinda cute and funny but they're also dogs and they hardcore beg for food when you get it (and a couple of them are these big dogs). It's kinda weird and surreal. Anyway, the show was nice. As it's a bar/restaurant gig, the band's material was mostly pretty straight and standard fare. A little later towards the end, Schaeffer was there and got behind the drums while the other drummer took a break and they did more of a free-form freakout thing that was pretty awesome. Also at one point towards the end they played "In a Silent Way" and then there was something else I recognized but couldn't place (closer to a standard but I think something I have...now I think it's faded from my brain though). I talked to David for a little bit before we left. Anyway, it was a good if not bittersweet time.
