ateolf: (zoo and you)
So had a busy end and beginning of days since my last post! After work on Friday (that's yesterday) Mary Beth and I walked down to Ballet Memphis where they were having a quick performance (they're calling "dance in 30" as in minutes). There were two pieces and I don't remember what the first one was called but it's apparently a big classic of the late Romantic period. It was four female dancers and I thought it was quite good. It had quite an abstract and somewhat impressionistic feel and the techniques and moves hit unexpected areas (at least for a neophyte like myself). Then the next one was new and made by one of the dancers and called Suppression and Succession. It seemed to have a bit of commentary on the first piece. It had seven male dancers. And especially started off a little similar but then diverged into more modern types of dance expression. But also had alternating combinations and solo and group dancers. It was a little more explicit (in the relative sense, I mean it's still only using dance to convey the message) in what it was saying, but it was still good. We had walked over there and then walked back home just in time to get ready for the next thing. We go and start the car and it almost won't start! I have to hold the key down and it finally does and we're like fuck it we gotta get to the Lamplighter! So we do.

Now, I'd been dumb and up until earlier this week, I thought this show (Pylon Reenactment Society with Ibex Clone and Data Drums) was a Pylon tribute show with members of Ibex Clone and Data Drums. And then I found out I'm dumb as hell! Pylon Reenactment Society is Vanessa's (you know, the actual singer of Pylon) current band which does Pylon songs and new songs in the style of Pylon to keep the spirit of Pylon alive! Well, that's even more exciting. And pretty-much-Pylon is playing the fucking Lamplighter!? Wow! We got there early so we could stake out a spot close so Mary Beth could see. A lot of people came out for this one so saw lots of friends. We bought merch first and I got a t-shirt and the new cd Pylon Reenactment Society: Magnet Factory. Then bands played and Ibex Clone was first and then Data Drums and both were pretty good. Then it was Pylon Reenactment Society and they were so good! We were right there next to Vanessa on the side. The band was great. The drummer, Gregory, had the Alan Myers moves down pat (and a ton of energy and perfect timing)! They played my favorite song which is "Driving School" and now I know how they make that oscillator sound! I'd assumed it was like a regular oscillator but it's the bass pickups getting electromagnetic interference from the little crt they've got on a stand. That's cool and makes sense and unexpected! (And technically it's an oscillator like any sort of feedback loop, but yeah! and fun to watch...) (I would have liked to hear "Read a Book" and "Stop It" but hey! Definitely not picky, it was great! And their new songs are really fucking good too! It was just a great show all around. Kinda funny 'cuz they finished a song and were like, yeah, we're going to do the encore now, just straight into it (I mean, the Lamplighter doesn't have a backstage so it probably would have been logistically difficult to leave and come back for an encore like that, but it was funny. Vanessa was barefoot and Mary Beth was wearing open toed shoes and their toenail polishes matched! I tried to get MB to show her feet to Vanessa but she was too shy! All of the band seemed really nice and even seemed enthusiastic about the Lamplighter! The drummer came up and fist bumped everyone near the stage before they started (and even after we complimented them after it was done...and after he lay collapsed on the floor for a while). They had moved the pool table out of the music room within a week before or so, probably specifically for this show, and yeah, needed the room. The Lamp was packed! But we had a great spot. Really really fun show. Mary Beth nabbed the setlist too.

We managed to get the car started again and back home. Then we were up early today. We had plans to celebrate our anniversary this weekend. Well, I knew the car battery needed to be taken care of so I took the car up to Advance Auto Parts first thing. This time it felt like I barely got the engine to turn over. Felt like it was just the last little bit of juice in the battery being squeezed out. Well, I manage to get there and had forgotten that Mary Beth's battery enclosure is more complicated than my previous cars. It has an extra bolt holding the battery down on the bottom (that you need a socket wrench to get to 'cuz of the lack of space) and then a little flap on top of that that needs to be removed with a screwdriver. I had brought a wrench which was enough to take off the cables but then I had all this other stuff. Thankfully I was able to borrow the tools from the store and get the damn battery off. And yeah, when I went to take it out I could tell right away that there was leaked battery fluid all over the positive terminal. So got it off and replaced and then came back home in time to go up to La Baguette where we'd ordered some sandwiches and cakes to celebrate our anniversary!

We took the sandwiches up to the Park and sat on a bench near the pond eating them. It was very nice. We had the cooler and drinks and stuff. Then we took a walk around the Old Forest. After that we swung by ups to drop off my jacket (yeah, my replacement jacket came yesterday but it's too big so sending it back to get a size smaller...exciting stuff!). And then we went home and walked over to Overton Square for the Latin Fest 901. We walked around, we'd just eaten so weren't really hungry but wanted to see it. I picked up some sodas from Sweet Noshings on the way home. I think that's about it! Though I'm probably forgetting something.
