ateolf: (the goat...BITCH!)
So much to catch up on! It's been a hectic past two days (very especially yesterday) but mostly things have been good. On Friday, as I said before, I started off trying to drain my phone's battery (per the new battery instructions) as fast as possible so I could get it charged back up again in time for the barrage of activities. So I had the screen brightness cranked up with the flashlight going full on while streaming a playthrough of The Legend of Zelda (original, NES, of course) with the sound on. That worked well! The battery was fully drained while it was still morning and the phone was charged by early afternoon. After work I went up to Kinko's to print off small hand-flyers for the upcoming shows to have at the tribute. Then I went up to Haven Haus at night for the little preview show. Nonconnah played first and they were good. Then it was Dinosauria who was also good! Also Binky, one of the Haven Haus cats who was hanging out with us, made an appearance in my little video of Malcolm's set. Jay was holding him(?) but it being close to someone making music he quickly bolted and went and got pets from someone farther away. Nice! Then it was Zan Hoffman. I talked to folks and hung out and it was a pretty good time but I had to leave as soon as I could because I had to get up early.

So yesterday morning I got up early to go to my Uncle Jim's funeral in Forrest City. I was running just a little bit behind but got to the church just in time. It was very packed. He had a lot of friends here (though he'd been living in Texas for the past while). It was a Catholic funeral so it was of course pretty much just regular mass with a eulogy at the end. It was good to see lots of family. There was a reception or whatever you'd call it (I don't think "wake" is fitting here) in the church's hall next door and it was really nice especially to get the chance to talk to Katie and Crystal, both of whom I hadn't talked to in really forever. I was a little sad I couldn't catch up more, I stayed a little bit but not very long since I had to get back with some time to get ready for the tribute show at night.

So I got back to Memphis with a few hours to spare to get ready and eat and all that. I came home to a package with some preordered cds (well, one was preordered and the other already released but ordered with it) that finally came after a manufacture delay: Les Rallizes Dénudés: Citta' '93 and Les Rallizes Dénudés: Baus '93. I hadn't anything packed yet 'cuz I had so much going on I didn't have time. But I got that done pretty quickly, if not extremely sloppily (I had more extra table crap than usual so I didn't really have room in the bag I usually use for that so I just had crap spilling out all over the place). I was running just a little bit behind, but Paul who'd gotten there on time let me know the market event that was on earlier hadn't quite wrapped up yet so I in fact got there right on time to set up! Paul and Zan were there to help with stuff right away. I got my stuff set up and it wasn't as big a pain as I was afraid it might be. Took forever to find a good place to set up the recorder (I ended up recording all the sets) but I found one. Deanna, who I only just met but was a longtime friend of Mike's and they both had radio shows at the same station back in 78 (hers bluegrass and Mike's, you know, the Mike stuff! the experimental weirdo stuff we so love), anyway she was there early too and helped out with stuff and that was very nice. The show starts, we started the music at 5:30 and it went Nonconnah, myself, Panic Signals, Ihcilon, Revenge Body, Pas moi, Jack the Giant Killer, Ben Ricketts, Zan Hoffman aka Bodycocktail, Richard Martin and Roger Moneymaker, True Sons of Thunder. And everyone was awesome and it was a great time. I was surprised that there was even a pretty good crowd at the beginning in the earlier day while there was still daylight out and everything. It got pretty packed in the middle so it was a pretty nice feeling to see all these people. And we had a good number of old friends of Mike's going back into the 80s and newer fans like myself and all and it everyone seemed very into it all. There were so many good sets that it's hard to get into it all. I related my small bit of Mike Honeycutt stories (the one where I first noticed him getting into Pas moi's set (before he introduced himself to me a little later) was a hit as it is quite a good story!). Kole seemed to be having some volume issues during their set and at some point towards the end something kicked in at full volume where it hadn't been and it was crazy loud so I made a callback and channeled Mike's spirit and shouted and a bunch of other people joined in too. Roger Moneymaker coming and joining Richard Martin was a surprise. And Roger had driven from Albuquerque for this. I didn't know either of them before (though Richard briefly introduced himself to me at the Goner show I played a few weeks ago). They were really fuckin' awesome and did a great noise set. Richard on guitar with lots of distortion and fast tremolo (he played laid down and rubbed some stuff on the strings kinda like a lap steel guitar) and Roger played some eurorack and they both went into amps and were loud and noisy and great. Also, Chris Walker (former owner of Barrister's and Sherry's ex) came up from Austin for this. Anyway, damn. It all ran smoothly and there was much love. I'm probably at a point where I'm repeating myself now. Also, Richard Martin plays with True Sons of Thunder (with Eric and Abe and there's another member who wasn't able to play last night) and they played a really awesome rock set with tons of guitar noise. There are probably some good details I should remember but I'm forgetting. As I was leaving to pull my car back up to load stuff out, there was this cop car just sitting there right next to my car across the street and I'm like, uh, what's going on? But then I crossed to get to my car and it went away. I got home right as the daylight savings time was hitting at the two-am-becomes-three-am hour. So I was glad as fuck to get in bed and get some good sleep and wake up way the fuck late today! Viva Mike Honeycutt!
