Last night Mary Beth and I went out to Crosstown to see a Blueshift performance in collaboration with the Iceburg composer collective, who they've been doing a thing with annually for the past several years. This time they had a different element with live acting from the improv troupe Bluff City Liars. They were just told the title of each piece and its duration before and they improv'd along with it. It was a pretty interesting and fun experience. The music was great. A lot of it got kind of an old radio play feel going along with the drama, especially with the jabs of discordant piano chords. Sometimes watching the acting put the music into the background and you'd want to pay closer attention to the music. But at times they went very well together, I mean, of course the actors are reacting to the music, but there were times when a stinger or some other musical thing would come right after a certain line and seem kind of like a punctuation and it was funny how well it fit. Anyway, just some nice serendipitous juxtapositions. They're doing another one (with different music and actors) on Saturday.
