Jazz Drums

I had two "scares" yesterday of people almost cancelling from the festival. One was actually from the night before, but it got resolved over emails over the night. The other was more of leading to awkwardness because they said they had a work thing come up out-of-town through the weekend. So I went and found a replacement and then just a little later they came back and said they'd arranged transportation back to Memphis for the festival so I had to then tell the person I'd just gotten as a "replacement": never mind! So that was fun (awkward). Other than that had another Memphis Free Jazz Initiative show last night. It was the same crew of four. Jack came even though he broke a rib a few weeks ago. He says after the first week it hasn't been so bad. But still! I'd thought he wouldn't be able to play, but then he did. Tried to vary it up a little bit. My playing capabilities aren't so great on the drums right now (just frustrating since I know I used to be much much better). Mostly relegating myself to playing one thing at a time (like, okay, just the cymbal now...now just the bass drum...now toms). And I think I was a little intimidated because there was a real jazz drummer watching (though he got up and left pretty soon into it). Anyway, so I was trying to be more restrained (also since my drums drowned everything out in the last recording, I thought I'd at least give the other instruments a chance to come through more this time). I wasn't sure how it all went, but last night I listened to little bits of the recording and what I heard sounded pretty good, so I don't feel too bad. Then Ra Kalam Bob Moses+Pop Saw played and they were very good. Pop Saw has always been good and then it was awesome to watch Bob play. Anyway, a pretty good time. Now I'm sleepy.
