Scanner

I got the sheet music in the mail yesterday: Olly Wilson's "Echoes" and Milton Babbitt's "Philomel." I'm excited and so I can finally scan "Philomel" and send it to the soprano who's singing it. Well, this score is slightly larger dimensions than the other sheet music I've gotten. I tried scanning it on my own scanner and it wasn't fitting very well. I tried more freeform centered positioning but sometimes I could get it and sometimes if there was text in the margin it'd cut it off some and it was going to be difficult to get it all and do a decent job. So I went up to kinkos to scan it. Then that proved a huge pain too. Their scanners had similar issues with the dimensions but they at least had an option to scan a large legal-sized area. I was hoping I could get 2 pages at a time but that was also just a little too big for that so I had to do one page at a time (and turned on the side so it could fit it correctly). Well, so I'm scanning and it's a slow process and this score has a lot of pages and I get halfway through and I get an error telling me I exceeded the 60MB file limit and I had to start over. Well, fuck! So at this point I'm wondering if there's just a better way and if they have better equipment behind the counter and they could scan it for me and at least see if it'd be cheaper that way if they could get 2 pages at a time. But no, they had the same type of equipment back there. They wondered if they could do it other ways but once again the pages were just slightly too large. So I went back to start it over doing it the way I'd been before. But keeping in mind the limit (now that the machine fucking told it to me) and stopping each pdf before I hit it and just starting a new file. So I did that and like I said it was all a pain in the ass and it took a long time, but it's done. Then back home to edit it down into all the right dimensions (and learning new tricks with layer groups in gimp in the process). So I got it sent out and all that. I still have to scan "Echoes" but that's in a normal paper size so I should be able to do it at home no problem. Okay, then at night I went out to a show, a house show, I haven't been to one of those in a long time. Unsurprisingly it was a case of me being the one way older person there. But let's see, at first it was Gooetones and they played kinda indie-ish guitar pop and they did a cover of "Here She Comes Now". Then it was Ben Ricketts who also did a special cover: "Idioteque." Next was Suroor. And last was W1ND0W (it was their release show). At the end of the set they did a jazzy improv thing with Ben Ricketts. They were on the ipad with these jazzy loops and Ben was playing jazzy chords on the electric piano sounds. So there's this glockenspiel that's been on stage (or what counts for a stage at a house show...the performance area!) the whole time and then they stop and it had never been played. Jill's also, "thank you that's all" and then I'm like "so what's with Chekhov's glockenspiel?" And then they're like "oh shit! I forgot to play it!" and asked Ben if they could go back so it was back into the song with Jill jamming out on glockenspiel and it was a lot of fun! I'm glad I could have imparted the importance of always playing a glockenspiel if one happens to be "on stage"!
