Yesterday during my lunch break Mary Beth and I did The Fresh Market grocery run. Then later in the evening I finished reading Native Son by Richard Wright. It was okay. The writing was pretty lackluster, but there were some very insightful themes. It was almost a bit pulpy in the plot. Towards the end there's a very long (a few long and one very long) speech that mostly just re-sums up the themes that were presented better earlier in the novel, but it also throws in a few other things, that are sometimes kinda weird (like a defense for, not the effects of but, the origins of slavery?). And I get the whole point of centering it around the "worst" or lowest type of character in order to apply the ideas to all black people and also in the parallels it brings between the main character's actions and the continued oppression of the white ruling class, but at times the execution feels a bit muddled. Anyway, the execution of my review is pretty muddled. Anyway, what else? Well, we're hanging out at home and we hear a bunch of sirens and helicopters and stuff and it feels like something's going on. A little later I get online and see that there's a man going around town on a shooting spree and the city's pretty much on lockdown. They caught him a bit later, but it was all pretty fucked up (the dude livestreamed his first shooting too, it's in national news too so you may have seen about it even if you're not in Memphis).
