Mary Beth went over to Overton Park yesterday for a walk in the forest. We drove over and as it was Mother's Day were barely able to find a parking spot. But in the forest it was very nice and we had a lovely walk. Then I went over to my parents' in the evening. Mary Beth stayed home as she hasn't been doing well and wouldn't be able to take it if they brought up the Supreme Court and abortion. Well, she turned out to be 100% right. It didn't come up for long but when it did it was a doozy. First my dad made a passing remark about the priest's sermon this morning and talking about Mother's Day and then he couldn't help but go on his thoughts on abortion (and wow, the pertinent things a PRIEST might have to say on that subject!) but at least didn't go into any detail. But then my mom took the ball and ran with it. She started reading out loud where I'd posted the lyrics to "Support Abortion" this past week, making a few bits of commentary here and there: "what about the babies' rights?" and (to my dad) "he thinks we're fascists" (not even sure where THAT came from...!?...as I've said absolutely nothing about fascism...!?...not that I should try to apply much logic or meaning into any of this). And she even held up her phone with a picture of a fetus on it. I was pretty much just ignoring them the whole time. But then...and this was maybe even before all that...they were going off on tangents that came out of nowhere that were even more disturbing. Like, for some reason, they were talking about the violence against Native Americans in the early American history and how it was okay because they were violent too. And that the concept of war crimes is a recent invention and that Russia has always fought wars this way so it's okay. And, my dad bringing the most salient point while proceeding to completely miss it, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Japan so we have no room to say anything. And trans bathroom stuff popped up too for good measure. Then I jumped ship and went back home. At least Father's Day isn't for another whole month or whatever?
