Mary Beth and I did our Fresh Market grocery run during my lunch break yesterday. It was a pretty cold and dreary day. At night we watched Ragtime. It's been a while since I read the book, but it seemed pretty faithful (just more trimmed-back, leaving out a lot of the additional historical figures as characters, I was telling Mary Beth how there was a whole subplot with Emma Goldman that wasn't in the movie and then we watched the deleted scene and it was her, though did kinda feel squeezed-in with that whole plot condensed as one scene that doesn't come back up and I can see why was cut as it probably didn't fit in with the rest of the movie too well...also Harry Houdini was reduced to just news clips...no criticism of the movie, that would be a lot of stuff to cover so I thought they did well keeping the spirit of the core plot...apparently E.L. Doctorow was originally going to write the screenplay but he wanted to include everything and have eight or ten one-hour segments and that, of course, did not happen). It was also fun to revisit and remind myself of all that happened in the book, because, like I said, it had been a while.
