American Haiku
Feb. 13th, 2019 06:43 pmWent to a show last night at the Hi-Tone. It was Tire and some openers. First was Wesley Wolffe and it was, I guess I wouldn't say I liked it but I also guess I didn't quite dislike it. It was on the slightly heavy side of alternative rock. The lead guitarist shredded a bit much (not all the time, but when he did it was some mega-shreddin'). Next was Allison Kasper and I liked her stuff a bit. Her stuff was kinda slightly fuzzed out indie rock. Like, it wasn't all fuzzed but often it was. She also has a really nice shouting voice; she wasn't always shouting but she did sometimes. Tire was last and they were fantastic as before. The last song they played was the one with one plodding bass note (kinda like if "Spectre Vs. Rector" only had one note and it was a eensy bit slower, the bass anyway) and bursts of drums and feedback everywhere on the guitars (and sometimes microphone). That song rules, and a bunch of others too. Then today was work and I worked a bunch. They also gave us doughnuts and cupcakes so that was "sweet!" After work I met Mary Beth up at the Brooks to see the Georgia O'Keeffe in Hawaii exhibit. It was really nice. Also a few things of note: Ted Faiers exhibit, he did this large woodcut things (abstract earlier and moving into figures later) that were really awesome and he taught at MCA back in the day; this Terry Adkins sculpture that's a bunch of cymbals timed to go off somewhere around every ten minutes, I liked that one a lot, unsurprisingly!; an Ernest Withers photo exhibit that was really excellent. I'm a pretty bummed that the op-art-ish abstract work that hung on the wall in front of the bathrooms for forever isn't up there now! Seeing that was always a comforting joy. There was some talk (which we didn't go to) but there was a reception and we got a little bit of food. Then looked at the main galleries. And now we're home! Lots of art!
