Caught up on the new episodes of The Good Place and Brooklyn 99 yesterday. Then Mary Beth and I went up to Crosstown Arts to see the Sonic Youth thing! And Steve Shelley was there so it make it the, uh...20th time I've seen him! (17 times with Sonic Youth, once with Two Dollar Guitar, and once at a record store thing before one of the many Sonic Youth shows...the latter two are the two times I talked to him). It was pretty awesome. It was as Steve described sort of a video mixtape surrounding Daydream Nation. It started with some concert footage from around the time of Daydream Nation and then their section of this documentary Put More Blood into the Music (the first part centers around John Zorn) and it was kinda awesome with its ridiculous use of green screen and video toaster effects for some of the interviews. It was made for the BBC and seems like it really hasn't been seen anywhere since then. Then there was a q&a with Steve and Lance Bangs (the director of the Daydream Nation concert movie that we saw for the last part) and Robert Gordon. It was a pretty nice discussion, though sometimes you could tell Robert was trying to lead Steve to a certain answer and he wouldn't go in the direction he wanted (starting off with questions about what kept bringing you back to Memphis...then forcing the issue of barbecue...then when someone shouted "Payne's" he was like, in not quite so many words, "well yeah, the band ate there and it was some of their favorites but it wasn't my favorite, I like the Four Way"). And after the q&a they showed the last part, which was the aforementioned concert film, from when they played Daydream Nation in its entirety (as they did when we saw 'em at Pitchfork) in Glasgow. It was edited to the highlights, so we saw about half of it or so. All in all a pretty awesome night. All kinds of old fanboy sensations have been reawakened in me to an extent and it's kinda fun reliving that feeling a little bit. Now we're up a bit early for a Saturday for a funeral.
