Mary Beth and I went to see Built to Spill at Minglewood last night. It was a good show. The opening band (Love as Laughter) was pretty terrible. You take the classic rock elements out of Built to Spill's music and...well, yeah, it was just classic rock. Built to Spill was only a three-piece this time (I saw 'em tour for You in Reverse, back in the day, and I'm pretty sure they were at least a four-piece at that time...I also recall the energy level being higher at that show). The worst part was this girl that kept getting in front of me. Mary Beth and I had gotten pretty near the front, second "row" over towards the side of the stage. She got in front of me after the band had started and was drunkenly dancing and flailing with her fucking backpack bumping into me a lot. She leaves after a couple songs. I scoot closer. Then later she comes back and pushes me aside to get in front of me again. Now she's even close so the backpack is worse. She also asked some guy what the name of the band playing was. Then when not flailing around she was on her phone. She left again after a few songs and I made sure there was no room to squeeze in front. So rinse and repeat and she came back a few songs later and had to stand somewhere else. They only played two songs from my favorite album ("Kicked It in the Sun" and "Randy Described Eternity"). The version of "The Plan" was really good with an extended outro jam. I got a Perfect from Now On. shirt. So that was the show!
