Went to the Memphis for Bernie meeting in the evening. Didn't stay super-long 'cuz had to leave for the show! Showed Emma the site results, she gave me some notes and we agreed to meet up tonight about it. It's definitely not perfect, but it's passable. We met up tonight after work. I made some changes (mostly minor markup stuff) as we went through it. Also when we got to stuff that would take more research/time I made note and we moved along. Anyway, pretty exciting. Hopefully it won't take too much longer. But gonna be busy next couple weeks.
Now for the Public Image Ltd. show! Hadn't been to the New Daisy in an amount of time resembling a decade. They just recently did the remodel with new ownership and it looks like they're going for more of a Minglewood vibe. I guess it's a step up from the shitty half-assed monster-rock radio thing they were (with a healthy dose of managerial apathy). Anyway, fucking Brad was there! I have not seen him in goddamn years. So that was coolio. How was PiL?, you ask. Started off pretty disappointed 'cuz they definitely stayed hitting areas of their catalog that are not for me. But it didn't take long to hit me how awesome it was just being in the same room as John Lydon and hearing his fucking voice (no denying, his voice on its own is just a goddamn force). After not too long I even started to enjoy the playing on these songs I otherwise would normally find to be on the crappy side (maybe it was just the influence of John, but I was having a good time). At one point they started this song and I thought it was "Bad Baby" for a minute, it was in that style (and the bass was pretty deep and not super-distinguishable). Anyway, it was some other song (something to do with water, I think?). But finally they did "Death Disco" and it fucking ruled. They played it really long too. All in all, they only did three songs from their good albums (first three, of course). "Death Disco," "Religion," and "Public Image" (so they skipped The Flowers of Romance entirely which pissed Jacques off, but I guess I felt lucky we got what we got). Instead of an "encore" John just said he needed to take a smoke break and hoped we'd still be around in three minutes. So that's when they come on with "Religion." Holy shit. Highlight of the fucking set. If everything else had been complete shit, this would have more than made the show worth it. They REALLY dragged it out. And after a while, John just started chanting "turn up the bass, turn up the bass" interspersed with asking us if we wanted to hear more bass. So they'd turn it up some and I'd be like, wow, that's a lot of fucking bass. Then John would start the chant again. And again. And it eventually just got to where there was this insane wash of fucking bass rumbling everything. It was spectacular. I picked up a t-shirt, which I'm proud to wear. Overall, a weird set. Maybe kinda like when I saw Suicide, weirdly way better than it should have been (but the older material, especially "Religion" was just fucking good). Anyway, I'd come in with low expectations and high hopes. It probably didn't match my hopes, but it well exceeded my expectations (biggest hope was, of course, more earlier stuff). As I said, I had a great time and I have to just put my foot down and say it ruled.
Oh yeah, almost forgot to post about what happened after the concert. I should also mentioned we saw Jennifer and Stephanie (former colleagues from Whitehaven). They were actually in one of the goofy vip sections at the New Daisy (roped off area with couches and shit, mostly they were empty, anyway). So we said hi, hadn't seen either of them in a goodly while. But I wanted to mention that after we left, Mary Beth was feeling hungry so we stopped at Huey's. A band was playing and they were super-loud. There were some people on the patio so we went out there. We even passed the bartender as we were walking out there. So we sit there forever and nobody comes around. Finally I go in to ask a waiter or whoever if they could take our order. I go up to the bartender and he's looking at a phone or something and someone has to get his attention for me. I tell him we're outside and ask if we could get our order. He says the patio is closed. I asked if we could order our food inside and just take it out there ourselves 'cuz it's too loud inside. He says we can't and the band will probably be done pretty soon (all the time spoken in a pretty why-are-you-bothering-me? kind of bored attitude). So yeah, we left and went to the Deli (which ended up being an ace choice anyway). Makes you miss the awesome waitstaff Huey's has(/had?). Anyway, where's Tony when you need him?
