ateolf: (Knoxville Boi)
A fun quick trip to Nashville yesterday. Mary Beth and I rode up with Jacques. The goal was the Scharpling & Wurster show. Left latish morning. Got there and tried to eat at The Pharmacy but it was an hour wait (and we didn't have THAT many hours). While looking for somewhere else to eat, I happened to stumble upon a place called Five Points Pizza that wasn't too far away. Sounded promising and it was really good so that was a nice turn of fate. Okay, then record shopping. To Grimey's! First Grimey's Two, actually. I'd never managed to get inside the almost-next-door used location so that was fun. In there I picked up: Cymande: Arrival, Arvo Pärt: Te Deumm, Swell Maps: Wastrels and Whippersnappers, Chelsea Wolfe: Pain Is Beauty, Windsor for the Derby: Calm Hades Float (thought I'd been incredibly stupid picking up an album I've already got...see the cover of this reissue is completely different! (and the font's blurred and not terribly legible) then I realized there's bonus tracks I don't have so not stupid after all!), Angelo Badalamenti: Soundtrack from Twin Peaks, Angelo Badalamenti: Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me soundtrack, Azita: Life on the Fly, and LSD March: Under Milk Wood. Okay, then to the regular Grimey's where I spent WAY too much money. Yikes! Okay, but I got awesome stuff: Aphex Twin: Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt2, Trayer: Afterlife an Abandoned Theme Park, Venetian Snares: Doll Doll Doll, Bill Holt: Dreamies, Deutsche Wertarbeit: s/t, Martin Hannett & Steve Hopkins: The Invisible Girls, Conrad Schnitzler: Gelb, Conrad Schnitzler: Grün, The Body and Thou: You, Whom I Have Always Hated, and William Onyeabor: s/t (yeah, the friggin' box set!). Well, I'm excited about the stuff I've got. Though not sure about what I'm currently listening to. I've liked a lot of what I've heard by Cymande, but I'm starting to think this album is not their better work. After that we went to this meet up at the Pour House for "friends of Tom." After that we walked over to the venue (at Third Man Records). We waited outside a little bit then they let us inside to mill around a too-small courtyard. I actually liked the layout of the building(s) quite a bit. And the courtyard was kinda cool too though we were herded into it without direction. The show was quite good. I laughed a lot a few times (even though I'm not a superfan or anything, but some of their stuff makes me crack up so fucking much). A peek in the record store afterwards met my expectations of what I'd heard about it (just stuff on the label, so 90% stuff Jack White's played on, really small too, I guess I shouldn't judge it though since it's exactly what it's supposed to be). We'd talked about staying the night, but it ended up getting out relatively early so Jacques was up for driving home straight away. That was fine. So we're back home now and stuff. I woke up earlier than I should have but whatever. Here's a tidbit from my last post that I forgot to mention in my sleepy haze. It's stupid but it's a proud moment for me! Going to barbecue fest, I was thinking I'd save the hassle of the crowds by paying to park, sure. Maybe they'll do a little bit of festival price gouging but whatever. Oh, then we get there and the parking lots are fucking $25! Oh, but the cheap ones a little farther away were $20. Shit, well, fuck that. Did have to do some searching, but I found free street parking only a 5 minute walk from an entrance, so take that! And we made it just before 1 pm when free admission stopped. So totally free! Okay I'm far too proud of my cheap parking skills, but whatever.
