Art Failure
Oct. 16th, 2014 02:39 pmMary Beth and I watched the Music Is the Weapon Fela Kuti documentary on Netflix yesterday. It was really good. It was made in-the-moment in the early 80s which will make a nice contrast to the contemporary one that I hope I'm able to see at the Brooks next week. Jacques came over yesterday evening and we tried to finally order the record. There's one company Jacques had talked to (Mobineko) that did not have the 10 panel insert as an option, but they told him they'd be able to do for the same price as one of their other packages and to just put a note in the order about it. They even made us a custom template. Doing a little bit of research this past week, I found an option that was cheaper than the original place we went with whose prices jumped up. It was over a hundred dollars cheaper to get the discs and artwork done separately. Well, digging into it a little more, I started calculating the shipping from the different companies and getting the empty cases (which aren't that much) but it pushed the price up a bit more, though still cheaper. Well, Mobineko's deal ended up being right in between the two other options. So since it was only a little more than getting the pieces separately and puttign them together ourselves, we figured it was the best bet (and the discs could even be shrinkwrapped). Well, so we go ahead with the order, yay! We're finishing this! Well, we got the custom template and realized the artwork wasn't going to simply jump over nice and easy, given the bleedout areas that altered the dimensions just that little bit. Well, we did some work and started to get something, but due to the resizing involved and the differences in the original images, we noticed the band logo, which is uniform on all the pictures, had gotten bigger or smaller in a couple of the panels. Which, ruins the whole effect and since we're going out of our way and paying so much JUST FOR THIS, it would be stupid to screw it up. Since it was super later, we called it quits to think on it and work on it later. So we've gotta reformat the artwork. I guess it just calls for a plan and more consistency in the transformations. Let's see what we can do with it. It's tricky 'cuz the logo has to be centered in all the panels, and it's such a lopsided beast. It's not impossible, but it is a really annoying hurdle.
