roadtrip, Radiohead, St. Louis, etc...
May. 15th, 2008 05:06 pmman, yesterday was fuckin' awesome! i woke up too early so was kinda tired, but uh, anyway...we (Mary Beth and i, of course) drove out to pick Ryan up in Munford and then off we were...it was a pretty decent drive up...we get to St. Louis and we go to this one area where there's a bunch of stuff or whatever and walk around...we found an afghani restaurant...never had afghani food, of course there's not a place that has it in Memphis...it was really good...the closest i'd compare it to is persian (which obviously makes sense...) but it has its own unique elements, not that i could actually pinpoint what they are...but of course it has that whole middle-eastern thing going on...anyway, very good...then there was this used bookstore right next to where we parked...maybe a bad idea, but i got a bunch of books (they're left in my car trunk so i'll have to report on what i actually got in a later post...) we spent too much time in there (my fault, and i was the one wanting to hurry and thinking it would be quick...but being in a fuckin' bookstore just sucks away all perception of time...argh!) anyway, we get out and it's way later than it should have been...so we hurry off to the show...then it turns out when asking for directions at the store i apparently left our printed directions, but Ryan called someone and we were saved...
anyway...as i say, we're running late...then traffic getting into the venue (the huge, craptacular amphitheater) was pretty backed up (of course mostly people going to the show...) we get there and it's just slightly past when the show's supposed to start...we hear some music in the distance as we're walking through the gates...and i recognize the faint boom of a certain drumbeat to a certain one of my favorite Liars songs ("A Visit from Drum") we had no idea who was opening and so i'm like "uh, fuck, are the Liars opening and we're fucking missing them!?" so i'm in a mild panic and rush to get seated and sure enough the Liars are playing! we didn't miss very much...we secured a spot on out on the lawn and it was surprisingly not bad...a little off to the side, but we managed to get real close (we scooted up for Radiohead when it started getting denser, and we were right up at the front of the lawn, which is still far away, but as close as we were gonna get...) Liars were good, and it was a pleasant surprise to see them...anyway, i got some merch after they played: a Radiohead shirt, a Liars shirt, and a Radiohead poster...i know i paid WAY too much for it all, but i'm a sucker i can't help myself...i need that souvenir aspect of merchandise...anyway, Radiohead plays and i'm expecting a great show, but they were so fucking good it completely blew away my expectations (well, not completely, but it was better than i was thinking it would be, and i was expecting a really good show...) they're really fucking good live...they played everything on In Rainbows and a bunch of other great stuff...and they did one In Rainbows outtake that i'd never heard...on much of their older stuff they did some different stuff in the songs and it was real sweet...their light show was pretty spectacular too (and i normally don't give a crap for light shows, of course light shows are normally cheesy and cliché...) it was, i dunno if i can go into full detail, but there were these huge pole things hanging in rows and they had lights in 'em and stuff and they made all these cool color patterns...i can't describe it well...anyway...it was neat-o...we were far away, but the music didn't feel distant...i think, strangely enough, the light show actually helped the show subconsciously feel closer (visually anyway)...ah, anyway, fucking awesome show, really...
so leaving the amphitheater, fuck! this venue (the fucking Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, yeah...) is in a weird, shittly location, in the middle of some distant office park...there's only one road that goes to it...traffic after the show was horrendous...to top it off, when we got there i was super low on gas (the gas light was on) and as all the cars around us were just sitting there we waited til it was at least moving SOMEWHAT before we started off, so as not to waste gas not even moving...we were in the parking lot for well over an hour...it was over two hours since the show had ended before we made it out away from the traffic...when we finally started off we were still only moving at a slow crawl out on that one street...anyway, but we got gas and all was fine...so we're driving home and we stop for eating at a waffle house...just before Mary Beth was talking about how according to people who've worked at waffle houses, the patrons are like the worst people in the world...then we're there and there's this one guy who's obnoxious and arguing about music with the cook...it's kinda comical, but anyway another group arrives and they're pumped up drunken redneck assholes and this one guy starts fighting with this guy other guy who had already been there...it was pretty ridiculous, i was thinking an actual fight might break out...it didn't, but the guy was being all loud and while comical in an abstract level it was pretty obnoxious...it was just macho bullshit...anyway, that gave me the energy to continue driving home for most of the way...finally, right before the exit to Dyersburg i got Ryan to drive and he drove the rest of the way to his house and i promptly passed the fuck out (this was for a little over an hour...it was probably around 5 to 6 am or so at this point...pretty damn late...) my nap did me well enough to drive home after we dropped him off...sleep was good today...anyway, thus concludes my jumbled recounting of the trip...it was a fun one...way more eventful than i thought it would be for how brief it was...
