We had a long, active day away from home. We started by going to the symphony in the early afternoon. They started off with "Irish Tune from County Derry" (which is an orchestration of "Danny Boy"). It was funny though 'cuz the guest conductor (who was pretty funny in general with his commentary) straight-up said that "Danny Boy" is "cheesy." Then it was Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's (not to be confused, as I was for a few seconds, with famed poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge!) Concerto for Violin in G minor with a guest soloist and that was good. They finished with Mendelssohn's "Scottish" symphony and that was also good. After that we went straight out to Germantown to have dinner at Moondance Grill. It was good and we got pretty stuffed. The main reason for going is that it's right across the street from GPAC where we were going next, but we had a good time with the good food. Okay so then we went to GPAC to see Meshell Ndegeocello. She was really good. First it was a few songs by her keyboardist and drummer, and their stuff was kind of lightly humorous and more musically cliched. But then the rest of the band came out. All the music was related to what I guess is something of a concept album she's recently put out that's all related to James Baldwin. So there was lots of reading quotes from him and that was good and the music was good. Some of it had kind of a space jazz feel, but there were lots of musical directions. And the musicians were good too. Later after coming home I finished writing the parts for The Terminator score and even managed to pick out the previously written "songs" to keep. So we'll see how that goes. Now I just need to "type" them up.
