Mary Beth and I went to a ballet performance by Collage at the Canon Center in the afternoon. The first two pieces were by Balanchine, The Prodigal Son, which we saw them do two years ago (pretty much the same cast too) and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux. For the first, Prokofiev's music was canned, but the Memphis Symphony Orchestra performed the rest of the works live (and for the second it was obviously some Tchaikovsky stuff). It was just two dancers as the "de deux" implies! And last it was Firebird, with MSO playing Stravinsky's music (again, they performed it sans ballet when we saw them earlier this year). Collage's rendition has new choreography and since I've never seen it before, I couldn't compare the two versions, but it was good. And the music was good. It was nice to hear it in a kind of context. I liked everything, but the Firebird was probably my favorite of the afternoon.
