(Boring Stuff and) Show!
Sep. 26th, 2024 09:59 amFinally during the second frustrating day of a deployment, Sampath figured a way to fix it so it works! (Never even found out the root cause of why it wasn't working with the initial setup as that was more simple and should have worked...but a second setup worked...but the details will be very long and boring and I will NOT go into them here!) But yeah, I was able to get ready and go to my show at the Lamplighter at night!
Got there and was setting up my stuff and all. We had another show happening after our show but we ran on time and it all went well. We were setting up and Chuck mentioned how the pa doesn't have stereo and Mathieu had this look of horror creep into his eyes. He was like, I do a lot with panning. Chuck, "I could set up this other speaker but it would be a bit of work." Mathieu, "How much work?" Chuck, "Well, not that much." And then Chuck set it up and adjusted everything and it was all sounding good and then he was like, actually that didn't end up being very much work. I've been running the door at Lamplighter shows because, well, who else? But this time since I was playing too I got Jack to volunteer and he wanted to get out as he's about to move out of the city very soon! So it was good to see him before that.
Okay, so the show! Artificer was first and their set was incredible as always! They had a new-to-me piece of gear: a Gameboy! (With some kind of sound randomizing software.) They delivered a masterful set of drones. Then it was Pas Musique and his set was great! He was the one source of beats during the show! Next it was Mathieu Sylvestre and he played one of the best sets I've seen this year. I'm glad they got the stereo set up because yeah, I can see why he was upset, his stuff is very spatially active, with the panning going all over the place a lot. He was doing a lot with this multi-track looping pedal. Very musique concrète sound collage stuff. It was really deep and really good. Then I was last. I did my thing with my tapes of myself going "aah". I actually had a false start. I was about two minutes into my set and I realized the recorder wasn't registering that it was picking up any sound for some reason. So I had to stop it and start over, which is annoying and I hate to do. Don't know what happened at all. As after starting and stopping and without doing anything else, it was working correctly. But yeah, it was a nice show and everyone that I saw was great. Turnout wasn't huge but some people did show up. It was OKAY, but I'll say could have been worse for a Wednesday night right on the cusp of Gonerfest (if that matters for our kind of show). I picked up some merch. I got a Pas Musique shirt and some cds: Pas: Flanked by Women and Pumpkins, Pas Musique: Abandoned Bird Egg, and Old Castle: Artwork 51. I also got Mathieu Sylvestre's cassette, though I normally don't do cassettes or listen to them, but he was so good I wanted to support him!
Now it's another day, and though we've already done a stuff for our anniversary, today is our actual anniversary. I'd wanted to celebrate in the morning with some kolaches from Bain, but I just found out that they shut down the bakery part of their establishment last year! So, bummer!
