Mary Beth and I went to the Symphony yesterday, the opening performance of the new season. It started off with "Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman" by Joan Tower and that was good. Then "Fanfare on Amazing Grace" by Adolphus Hailstork, which was okay. And then it was Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" with guest pianist Charlie Albright and that was good. As Charlie said in the pre- and post-talks, it has a lot of notes. Then it ended with Aaron Copeland's Symphony No. 3. I'm not a big fan of Copeland, there were some pretty alright parts in this one, especially early on, but when a lot of the very Copeland-ish stuff comes through, eh. Coming back from the intermission, Jenny was onstage getting ready (she wasn't in the first part, just the last) and saw me and waved. That's my first time to be recognized by an onstage MSO performer! Woo! Also, Delara was playing for the whole thing (on the subject of flute playing Crosstown Arts music programming managers playing with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra!), but we've only met a couple times so she wouldn't recognize me from a stage! Also, getting ready for this, since it's raining and all and the weather's turned a little cooler, I was putting on my jacket for the first time of the season. Well, I put it on and my breast post is all half falling off. Where the zipper attaches, it's mostly come apart from the jacket around the pocket and it's half hanging in there. It did in a pinch for yesterday but it looks pretty messed up (as it literally is messed up!). Ended up having to look for a new jacket online last night which was annoying. Anyway, there are all my symphony related stories!
