During my lunch break I finished reading Silas Marner by George Eliot and it was okay. I really liked the writing and the style, especially towards the beginning. I thought I might be more into it but the story itself was a little more lacking and straightforwardly Victorian. It wasn't bad or anything, but there were things I liked about it and there were some moments where it came together more for me, but it did get a little sappy. Anyway, I respected a lot about it but overall it wasn't my favorite thing. I'd be interested to read more Eliot though. I got some more of the birthday books in the mail: Sudden Noises from Inanimate Objects by Christopher Miller, Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, and Tlooth by Harry Mathews (the Miller book is subtitled "a novel in liner notes" and that's it's deal that it takes the form of a series of liner notes so that's got a conceptual bent that could be promising). Mary Beth also gave me a gift of Céline and Julie Go Boating! At night we went up to Crosstown for a show in the Green Room. General Labor played first and they were very good as always. They played a lot of new stuff and it was good. (It's kinda cool when there's a local band you've seen enough that you can recognize when songs are new.) And then it was Crosstown Arts' current music resident Eve Essex and she was good. She did some saxophone and some piccolo and sang with her electronic pop songs. She had on over her dress this bondage strap top that worked as a strap for her saxophone when she played it (could just clip it on that) and I was all, ahh, I wonder why you don't see that more! So it was all a good show. And then there were a whole bunch of people and it was lots of talking afterwards. Met Jacques's very new partner Ashton (I'm very proud for remembering someone I was just introduced to's name!). (Also it happened twice:.) There was someone else I was introduced to named Terin (which I'm only noting because it's an unusual name and I was also shocked that I remembered someone's name I was just introduced to...but it stuck 'cuz she was all "it's like 'Erin' with a 'T'...also, I confess that I only remembered Ashton's name right away as well because of Ashton Kutcher (whose last name I almost just wrote as "Crutcher")). I also was able to introduce myself to who I at first was referring to as "the new Jenny" (as in she's the one who has Jenny's old job at Crosstown now and also happens to play flute too), but her name is Delara and I've been on some email chains with her and we're scheduling to meet next month about MC next year, but I got to say hi in person. Okay, now on to another day!
