Started of yesterday by going to an early Indie Memphis movie: Mami Wata. And it was the only movie I had yesterday, which is kind've a weird feeling at this point! It was good. It made excellent use of high contrast black and white. I thought maybe the end was a little bit of a letdown, the way it kinda felt like it had a cake-and-eat-it-too thing with the action-war sequence at the end and it was showing consequences of that but then undid it with a deux ex machina. It was still good though! Oh yeah, and as we were getting to that movie there was some día de los muertos fair thing going on in Studio on the Square's parking lot so we had to navigate around that to get in, but then it had all completely disappeared by the time the movie was over! ¡Misterioso! Then the big event for yesterday was going to see Stevie Nicks at the FedEx Forum. It was the first time I've actually seen a concert there. We went pretty early as we figured it'd probably be a bunch of hassle. While standing in the line leading to the metal detectors coming in, we spotted a sign that only clear purses were allowed. Mary Beth had her regular, opaque purse so I went and ran it back to the car before we got in. Luckily we weren't parked too far away. Our seats were up in the top part (almost to the side of the stage). The seats up there are very narrow and steep so it feels like you could just fall off and plummet to your death (we survived though!). When we went in to get to our seats, the couple near the start of the row were all "be careful" and "we'll help you" but they wouldn't move at all so we had to kind of climb over and around them and it was kinda weird. The women to the other side did move for us when we got up again. There was supposed to have been an opening act but they'd cancelled due to an illness or something. Then Stevie Nicks played. She did all the biggest hits, of course. It was a fun show, though often seeing that big of a show from farther away, it kinda feels like watching it on tv (like how I felt when I saw The Cure way back when). They were small on the stage and though they had projections of the performers on the screens, the screens were more used for visual effects and the images of the performers tended to be pretty fleeting (not a complaint, the visuals probably worked better that way, and I thought the visuals were actually pretty good for that sort of thing). Also, since I couldn't see him too well, I was able to tell myself that the bass player was Lou Reed (short dark hair, sunglasses, come on!). The song I'd most wanted to hear was "Dreams" and they played that second, but performance wise it didn't hit as well as some of the other songs, it kinda felt like they were warming up into it as they went along. I was sure it would be a nightmare getting out of there but it ended up being not too bad. They blocked off MLK in the incoming direction so there were more lanes to let everyone out and that helped move it along. Now it's the last day of Indie Memphis and it's gonna be a busy one for me all around so I'm excited!
