I'll start with the day before the show and then get to the show in the next paragraph. I don't think there's really too much except that I finished reading Possession by A.S. Byatt. It was...really, I'm having trouble deciding what I think about it. There are a few things in the book...as relates to class and colonialism where, there are a few things within that feel like "clues" highlighting the problematic nature of some things that happen in the book, but otherwise, the book doesn't seem to give them much prominence and otherwise seems, in itself, to side with and emphasize the opposite. So I'm not sure if they're actually subtle hints or the book just kind of stumbles past them and ignores them. And also, one of the main themes of the book seems to be a rejection of and denouncement of that kind of reading in the first place Or are there shades of the idea that are being bridged? On the surface of it, also, the ending is kind of asinine (unless there's also something more ambivalent at work). Though maybe the subtle "hints" that are there are there if I can see them whether they were intended or not, but then on the other hand, if I read the ending straight-up as I read it then it completely refutes all that outright anyway. It's given me a lot to think about whether I'm thinking about it in the book's terms or not, and I'm really not sure.

Okay, enough book talk. On to the show! So, it was a weird fucking show! All the musicians were very good (though we were probably sloppy as hell or at least a bit sloppy). Droneroom was first and his set was good. Caryatids (touring band, Mike's from Coordinated Suicides other band) were up next and they were also good. The sound guy was weird as hell and seemed like he had no idea what he was doing (and maybe a combination of not being familiar with the venue's stuff, he kept intimating that things had gotten unplugged and were not as they should be, which, okay, but in other ways he seemed to have no idea what he was doing) and was a bit condescending (more passive-aggressive than explicitly aggressive). And then just lots of weird stuff. The only times the lights were completely turned off on the stage were when we were setting up and tearing down so in these situations we just couldn't fucking see anything and kept lighting up our phones to have any idea what was going on. All the sound guy was in charge over was the microphone and that was never right and half the time you'd look out and he was nowhere to be seen. Given our constrained practice situation, we hadn't played everything on the same equipment we played live so sound-wise things were off and a little wonky. Not the worst, but we were thrown off a bit. (And also we definitely didn't have enough time to practice before the show, as I'd mentioned before, we'd JUST got the songs down where we could play them fine but not on the first go.) And on the last song, "Battle Chant", the microphone was completely turned off and I couldn't see the sound guy anywhere so I just tried to scream it even louder than usual so at least maybe the people in the front could hear me some. Anyway, then Late Night Cardigan was last and it was great to play with them because they were/are great. For some reason, even though no video was projected throughout the rest of the sets (just the Black Lodge logo, fine), someone started projecting the trailer for Starsky & Hutch on a loop that went through their whole set. So it's like, the dumbest fucking backdrop imaginable (or almost at least). Then after the show, Jacques tried to get the door money to give to the touring band and the guy who did the door wouldn't give it to him and was being weird and just said "you'll have to talk to [name of owner that Jacques is friends with and set up the show through]" and said person wasn't there that night so why the fuck would he have to talk to said person to get the money when he's the guy that literally had the money. I mean, that wasn't even something I was dealing with myself, but hearing about it was pretty what-the-fuck. Anyway, time to stop thinking about this crap and just go work or something. Oh, I usually post our setlists on these ol' TFG show posts. Hadn't done on in a while, almost forgot. Yeah, here's our setlist:
Fall Behind
What Are You Doing with Our Lives?
Anthropocene
Histrionics
Battle Chant
