Show Hijinks
Jun. 11th, 2024 07:57 amCrazy fucking day yesterday was! After working early, I got off a little early and went up to be on the radio on Amy's show. We talked a little about Memphis Concrète in general and plugged that night's show. I got to play music from all the artists playing. Then at the end Amy was looking at Towering Flesh's other songs on bandcamp and saw "Mating Call of the Space Goat" and was like, ooh gotta play that one. So we got in two Towering Flesh tracks. And she passed the ball to me to say the song title on air. So that was fun! I had a nice mix of a few witty remarks (at least I thought so) and complete brain mush of forgetting what I was trying to say. I did manage the phrase "my words are broken" so that had a silver lining. Then I rushed home with just enough time to eat and then make it over to the show with Mary Beth.
So the Hi Tone's power was out (or mostly out, they said about a third of the building had power, but not the essential two thirds). Wayne (Towering Flesh) had gotten there first and had been advised to wait outside before hauling in gear as they weren't sure when it'd be back on. There was an MLGW truck around the corner working on it. So we're hoping it'll get fixed soon. Slowly more people start to arrive and accumulate and we're all standing outside waiting for the power to come back on. At one point the bank next door's alarm starts going off and I take that as a sign the power had just come back, but no, still the same we just had an alarm going off for a good while. After another while four more MLGW trucks pull up and are there for a little bit and then all leave so we're all, it's gotta be fixed now! But no. Finally a worker wandered over near us and Chris asked about how much longer and he said maybe four hours. So we're like fuck. At that point I tried a Hail Mary by texting Chuck to see if The Lamplighter didn't have anything going on and would be able to take us on. There was a drag show but they checked to see if they could adjust their time to accommodate us before they went on and then they did!
So, we all migrate over to The Lamplighter and it ended up being a great show. There was some friction at first as that Adam Glitch guy had come to see Neon Glittery and followed us over, but he's banned from The Lamplighter and Laurel was all on it kicking him out. All the musicians were great. Liars Serum then Neon Glittery then Chris Alford then Towering Flesh. The show went pretty well and there was a pretty good crowd for having changed venues past the last minute. It was kind of a blur due to all the craziness. But it was a real great vibe and Laurel was super nice and supportive. She said she'd actually heard from someone about the Hi Tone's power and was all, ooh, I wonder if we can move the show here and was actually starting to get that ball in motion at the same time I was reaching out to Chuck about it. And super grateful to Hunny Blunt all the drag performers who were so accommodating. We managed to get through in the goal timeframe but just barely. Mary Beth and I stuck around for the drag show afterwards. Hunny did a pretty spectacular "Mommy Dearest" montage. Also, picked up a cd from Chris: Leap of Faith: Transmutations. I'm probably forgetting stuff to say, but my brain's a little blurry right now!
