Valentimers
Feb. 15th, 2024 08:11 amI started off yesterday (aside from working and stuff) in a stereotypical fashion with a quick trip to Fresh Market to pick up some flowers. Unsurprisingly, walking up to the door I walked past a whole stream of people carrying their freshly purchased flowers. (I also managed to leave and come back and cut and put the flowers in a vase while Mary Beth was still outside drinking her coffee and didn't even realize until she came back in and saw the finished product on the counter without even realizing I had left.) In the afternoon we went on a short walk around the neighborhood (I forgot to mention in my last post that we did the same thing the day before). We saw some cats. It was good. Then at night our big Valentine's Day celebration was going to Gus's where we did the thing of getting the champagne they have on the menu. (For those not from Memphis or the other cities Gus's has now been franchised in, it's a fried chicken place, of astounding quality, but you know, with a nice greasy, divey aesthetic, and in no way at all fancy, except that they have champagne on the menu, I guess for those wanting some cheeky contrast.) Anyway, we made the plunge, not for the super-expensive Dom Pérignon, but for the other one they carry that's only a good bit expensive. So I am not at all a drinker as anyone who knows me knows, but on occasion (like New Year's and stuff), I'll share some champagne. And usually a few glasses of champagne doesn't have any effect on me. I drove us over so I'd planned on keeping it light anyway with at most two glasses (you know, in plastic cups) but after drinking just that little bit I started getting that disassociated feeling creeping in. Mary Beth also felt like she was getting unusually drunk quickly. Must have been a highly alcoholic one! Made sure to stretch out our meal and eat as much as possible, and afterwards we took a walk around that area of downtown for a bit (I had started to feel normal again by then but just in case). And while there we put a little James Brown on the jukebox ("Cold Sweat Pt. 1" and "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose") and Stevie Wonder (just "Superstition" and nothing from this album). Anyway, there you have it. And there you have it, our fun Valentine's Day.
