I went up to a show last night at Rock House Live (the cheesy venue seems to always somehow keep getting even cheesier, there's now this airbrushed "logo" with a badly painted cartoon brick wall busted through in a way that makes it hard to tell what's actually supposed to be going on at the back of the "stage" area). I went to see The Pop Ritual. They were okay, I seem to remember them being a little better. I mean, I always thought they had cheesy elements but mixed in with some good elements. It felt this time like the ratio isn't quite what I remembered. It has been a while though. I did talk to them later for a bit and they seemed nice and into Memphis Concrète. I met Jack (the Giant Killer) there after their set and then Josh showed up. So there was talking and hanging and stuff. There were some other bands. Walking on Landmines was next. They were grindcore in this kinda cute way. I mean, it was really bad but the songs were super short and kinda funny and endearing it existed in a way. The guitar player seemed like a dick, but the rest of the band seemed like young metalpunk kids. Next were the touring bands. There was Zaius and they were quite good. I kinda prejudged them 'cuz the drummer was wearing a backwards baseball cap and looking broish, but they pleasantly surprised me. They were kinda postrock with postmetal or something. They had heavy Tortoise vibes (they're from Chicago) and in a similar vein those parts reminded me a little of Bark Psychosis or Tristeza. They also had some metal leanings so maybe a little bit of Alcest. They were instrumental. The last band was Rosetta and they were pretty good. They were kinda shoegaze metal. Didn't think I was too into it at first but as they went on they warmed on me. Really didn't like the singer's guttural metal vocals but after a while maybe I got used to it 'cuz it didn't seem so bad or seemed to blend better towards the end, at least. Anyway, now it's a new morning and stuff.
