i only got like a bit over 4 hrs of sleep going into yesterday for reason that shall be discussed when i talk about the day before (a c00l story itself...) went to work at the usual time (well...9 min late, but that's incidental) finding it a bit curious that hardly anyone was therer...then i see a notice saying that the sunday start time has been changed to 11 (from 10)...well, it was a good thing i was never informed of this! although i'm sure they made this decision less than a week ago...as i only work sundays, i wasn't aware...'cuz they'd never contact me outside of work...so i sat around for near an hour...reading, then napping...and work didn't stop happening 'til 4...(i was expecting to get off at 3ish...i'm guessing the starting an hour later is the cause of this...) so i called Paul when i got off letting him know i was on my way...he informed me that Hatley's Garage (where i told the Florida ppl to meet up at) was closed today (well...yesterday...today when he told me)...doh! so i went to The Apartment and we waited for them to call (i had given them the number there...) but they never did...after a little while i went to eat at Payne's but they were closed too...bollocks to sunday and lazy bastards! then i just decided to eat at Back Yard Burger...i had also swung by Lastchance and Shangri-La a little earlier...then at 6 or 6:30 or something, i decided i'd better make tracks to the festival thingie to get a spot for seeing Sonic Youth...so i went to the colosseum and parked my car for $5 and took the shuttle bus downtown...made my way through a horrid mass of ppl down Beale St. to its end where the festival entrance was...through an even horrider mass of ppl inside the gates (i think Willie Nelson was just starting at the stage right near the entrance...) found a portapotty that didn't have too long a line and waited there for about 10 min or so...then went to find the stage SY would be playing at later...(they went on 9:15...i got there a few hours early, just to be ready and all...) found it...sat down nearby...then some gospel chick came on...kind've towards the middle/end of her show i went to the front so as to maintain a a good position for SY...when her show was over a couple left so i was able to get right at the gate thingie at the front...then i waited some and: Sonic Youth!!! (my 8th time to see this great great band...) i brought a pen and a receipt to write the setlist on...here it is:
Schizophrenia
Tom Violence
100%
Bull in the Heather
Free City Rhymes
Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)
Brother James
Mote
Kool Thing
NYC Ghosts & Flowers
-encore-
Teen Age Riot
pretty standard...i was hoping they'd do She Is Not Alone, 'cuz they've added that to their set since last tour, but no such luck...but it was still a great set...i was worried it wouldn't be too long, being in a festival and all, and it wasn't quite as long as their usual set, but it was still a pretty good length set...and i was worried we wouldn't get an encore...but we did...albeit a short one...at the end of Mote the noise was drawn out really long-like...it ruled...and Steve tricked me into thinking they were about to go into The Burning Spear, 'cuz he started playing the drums like the intro to that...but they didn't...though they kept making lotsa noise for a longer period of time...and the event staff bouncer guys had really cool "what the fuck!?" looks on their faces...the end of NYC Ghosts & Flowers was immaculate...when they went out for the encore Thurston thanked Bob Dylan and The Black Crows (both playing at the same time on other stages) for "shared cosmic energy"...Lee dedicated NYC Ghosts & Flowers to "American guitar visionary" John Fahey, someone whose name i didn't catch, and Joey Ramone...and when he said "Joey Ramone" Thurston lifted his fist into the air...there were a bunch of annoying ppl getting all excited and jumping around when they played their "hits"...but oh well...it was still great...i didn't run into David...(yea, i went to the Memphis in May music fest alone...i'm cool...) oh...and while i was sitting around, before the gospel chick did her show, these british guys complimented me on my shirt (Stooges...cover of Fun House...) the second one said "much regards" or something like that...i'm pretty sure that's what he said though...Jim was wearing a jacket (like, the suit kind...) and plaid pants...but i think i've seen him w/ plaid pants every time i've seen them...but the jacket all looked cool...Thurston, at one point, also thanked or greeted or whatever, "all my beautiful Tennessee brothers and sisters" (when i saw 'em in Atlanta in '98, i think, he said something about "all my beautiful british brothers and sisters"...) i'm sure there was some other cool stuff but i can't think it at the moment...

after walking back up Beale St. and getting to the shuttle bus, i heard my name called...it turns out i was in the same bus as Tommy, Amy, and Keith...some ppl i kind've know...they were parked at Tera's, so i gave 'em a ride back...

then i went to The Apartment...chilled w/ Paul for a brief amount of time and who shows up at the door but John Bowlan! he's back in town for the summer...he's been in Atlanta going to Georgia Tech...after a while he left and i went home to sleep...there's a good bit more that's been going on the past few days...i'll post it later...maybe right after i send this post...who knows...in less than two hours i'm goin' to Camy's...i might drive today...we'll see...woo...

marginally...i saw 'em 5 times over the summer...they've been doing it pretty slow...last night's was a little slower than the album version, but not quite as slow as most times i've seen 'em do it w/in the past year...

Hi just for the sake of sharing Fahey just passed a few months ago.He was a major influence for the whole avant-folk/postrock gastr del sol ,tortoise ,mazzacaneconnors, cul de sac etc scene. There's a cover by gastr del sol on Upgrade&afterlife He was the one who brought guitar picking towards contemporary music/minimalism If you like Jim O'Rourke&Pullman ,repetitive yet complexe guitar pieces you'll like his stuff from external exterior

fuck

i was probably one of the "Really Annoying" people jumping around during their "hits", but you have to understand how much i love that band, and that was my first time seeing them so if you remember a girl wearing a blue striped shirt and a boy wearing a johnny cash tee, that was me and my friend casey. and we were unapologetically rocking out. it was our first time, after all.

i know! i've NEVER been to a better place for records... vintage rules. i think i've been in there at least three times a week for the past six years or so... it's changed, but it's still great.
