ateolf: (METAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
A little after noon, I went up to Goner 'cuz the day before they'd posted about some cds they'd gotten in and there were a few that I thought I wouldn't mind grabbing. So I went and got some used cds: Bauhaus: Press the Eject and Give me the Tape, David Bowie: Aladdin Sane, Alan Vega • Alex Chilton • Ben Vaughn: Cubist Blues, John Coltrane: Lush Life, Flipper: Generic, Magazine: BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert, Sonny Rollins: Tenor Madness, and The Smiths: Meat Is Murder. Then I got ready and went over to Graham's for the first Memphis Concrète Scrap Metal Orchestra rehearsal!! It went pretty well! Definitely the first practice is just everyone getting the hang of this setup and my weird time signatures. We started easy, with just the "pulses" where everyone plays the same thing. After a bit and with some growing pains people were getting used to it. And two of the players didn't know anything about reading musical notation (it's really just the rhythms here for the scrap metal parts). And after a couple of patterns, they were able to start reading it. I'm going to try to make some more materials to help everyone, like the example I gave earlier but a lot of those aren't used anymore and there are newer ones. Four people weren't able to make it yesterday but everyone was pretty excited about it. And it sounds really cool hearing all that metal being banged on at once! Not too much aside from that. Stayed in and Mary Beth read a whole bunch to me. I'm kinda pathetic 'cuz I woke up with a little bit of doms from carrying a little bit of not-even-heavy stuff up and down the stairs a few times. Need to exercise more. I wish there were some stairs out in the world I could just walk up and down on at will.
