Pretty cool day yesterday. Mary Beth and I got ready and did our grocery shopping early. Then up to the Crosstown Concourse stairs to hear the lecture by Tara Rodgers. She talked some about technology in composition (using image data to create sound, generative algorithms and such) as well as electronic music history (she's wrote a book a ways back called Pink Noises about women in electronic music). She also discussed styles like more experimental music and more dance-oriented, repetitive electronic music. It was quite a good talk. Got to see a few of our friends there, Chris and Amy of course since they put the whole thing together. Later we, what did we do later? I probably dallied about and read some. Oh, I did do a little work 'cuz I thought of something I should have done so I did it. Then it was back up to Crosstown to watch Tara's performance as Analog Tara. We got there a bit early so we wandered around, got some Mempops, went upstairs as high as they'd let us go and check out the view from the window. Then it was the performance. First up was Duma (Dominic in a duo with someone whose name I don't know). They did technoey kinda stuff and it was good. Analog Tara was next (name a little ironic because at this performance she just used a laptop). She started off with a bit of abstract, ambient, white noise modulations. After a while it morphed into minimal techno (still with a heavy focus on texture). It'd go back and forth some but mostly it was beat-driven. It was really good. Nice time and nice to see a lot of people. Mykel Boyd came down from Chicago to donate some stuff for Memphis Concrète to sell off to raise some money (including some flexi records autographed by Adi Newton of Clock DVA). So that's pretty exciting. I'll need to take some pictures and add the stuff to gofundme. Got home pretty early and pretty much just read and went to bed. Rock and roll lifestyle.
