ateolf: (Robert points the bone at you)
Didn't mention it earlier, but I did hear back from Crosstown about my electronic music festival. They said that June would probably be too close to when they moved into the new space so it might be later in the year. They asked for a more detailed outline so I got that together and provided it to them this morning. We'll see what they say about that. I also had a breakthrough on the Memphis Forward site...quickly followed by a breakdown. After I got the information to login to the host's site, I found that I could in fact ssh into the linux server. So I set that up and did it and I was able to successfully install node.js and run my application! So great, it started up successfully. The issues came trying to connect to it through the site. The thing is, node.js applications create their own server so the pages connect through the specific port number you request. The site is on a shared server and the host (as with probably all hosts for shared servers) restricts all access to ports outside of those dedicated to specific processes. Tried to dig around a bit and see if I could find a way around this, but it looks like I'm going to have to rewrite the server-side in a different language. Such a shame, it was pretty exciting to learn node.js. I must say, I did get a kick out of those two lines of python from when I thought I wouldn't be able to run the node app directly. And hey, that's another language I get to tackle (did play a little with learning python on codecademy a while back, but I haven't actually programmed anything real with it). And I guess if I had known about this odd technical roadblock before I started, I never would have learned the node.js so I'm glad I did and I felt like I learned a lot even with this dinky does one little thing application. Speaking of learning javascript shit, a few coworkers have a little thing called "free pizza and javascript" that meets every now and again (maybe every week, I just found out about it today really) for a little "lunch and learn." Matt is doing this little course on typescript. There was already one before, but I did go to the one today. I may catch up on getting the thing we did to run if I take the spare time. Typescript is this sort of thing that compiles down to javascript bytecode and I guess it's, like it sounds, a typed javascript (and it's an open source project by microsoft of all unheard of things). They were using node in the little lesson too so it's pretty cool that I'd just figured out what's going on with all that on my own so recently!
