Lotta Rock

Left work at lunchtime on Friday. Mary Beth and I were on the road to Little Rock not too longer afterwards. Other than lots of rain, the drive up wasn't too eventful. Good thing we left so early. We got into town and ate at this barbecue place. It was pretty good, but I didn't think it was great. Mary Beth disagrees with me I'm sure. Then we went to the downtown area. It's kinda quaint over there. Went to the bar at the Capital Hotel. We were there a while, then it started getting busy so we walked towards where the show was gonna be. In spite of the rain we walked around and went down to the park by the river. Funny, the venue is literally next door to Little Rock's Gus's. Okay, we were a little early so we waited a bit.

The show was pretty awesome. The first two bands (Terminal Nation and Sea Hag) were local and not very good. Metal stuff that didn't stand out too much. I enjoyed all the touring bands though. Child Bite were first and they were pretty great. They had some metal elements but mostly weren't that metal. More punk. They kinda reminded me of Dead Kennedys, actually. High energy. The singer was all over the place. The Body was next and they were incredible. Had a feeling of transcendence. The only downside was they played a pretty short set. All the bands played pretty short sets. I mean, there were five fucking bands. But the show actually wasn't very late, maybe even over before midnight. The Body's set seemed the shorted, maybe it's just 'cuz it was the one I was most into and wanted to keep on going. Full of Hell were last. Didnd't think I was very into them. Seemed to more or less be straight death metal with the growly vocals and all and fast metal stuff. But then they'd stop and feed back and the singer had this rig of pedals making synth noises (very power electronics-y). As the set went on the droning noise burts got longer and more pronounced. I ended up liking 'em by the end. After the show hit the merch tables. First stop was The Body & Braveyoung: Nothing Passes and two of The Body's t-shirts. The singer/guitarist was really nice and funny when I talked to him (mostly telling him they should have played longer). The othe two bands both had 3 cds for $20 deals so I ended up going that route: Full of Hell: Roots of Earth Are Consuming My Home, Full of Hell • Merzbow: s/t (was surprised and pleased to see this one), Full of Hell: Rudiments of Mutilation, Child Bite: Strange Waste, Child Bite: Vision Crimes/Monomania, and Child Bite: The Living Breathing Organ Summer.

So it's night and we head to the hotel. It was actually pretty good for what it was. Super 8 and not filthy or anything, it was pretty cheap. So in the morning we head in to town to do stuff. We went to this bakery in Hillcrest, Mylo's and got some stuff, mostly to eat later on the road. It happened to be some festival (similar to Cooper Young) going on the street it was on. Road blocked off and all these tents set up. So we wandered that a bit, Mary Beth got some baby arm art and I got some Zelda ornaments. We were gonna eat pizza at the Damgoode Pies, but that location was under renovation so we left to go to another location. Yeah, it was extremely delicious. Then we went to a record store. The record stores in Little Rock weren't very good, but at the first one I got a couple things: John Coltrane: Impressions and My Bloody Valentine: M B V. We had a bunch of extra time in the day so we went to the Clinton Presidential Library. It was pretty awesome. I guess the most striking thing (to me) was the bit about Václav Havel, president of the Czech Republic, being a huge fan of and friends with Lou Reed and making sure he was at the White House during his visit. The land around it and the bridges over the Arkansas River were pretty neat too. We went to get sandwiches from Boulevard Bread Co, but they stopped making sandwiches by that time, we did get bread and cheese and delicious deli meat separately, however, to eat on the drive back. Then up north to the other record store. I ended up getting Moonshake: The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow. Then it was time to go back home. Overall Little Rock was pretty neat. Not huge city level, but it definitely had its charm. Had a good time (not just at the show) and would go back.

The Family Ghost practiced today. We've got a fucking show at the end of the week (Saturday at Rock House Live, ugh). So we threw together a short set and ran through it twice more or less (less) and we will be rocking then. Made use of my new running shoes today and went for a jog. A very short jog. Yeah, good I'm doing this 'cuz definitely out of fucking shape. Jogged for a few blocks. I was probably out for a little over ten minutes including warm up and down. Still feel the burning in my chest. Anyway, when I get some earphones in the mail I can get to it more and more.
