monday monday

finshed Beloved last night...i thought it was good and very well written (despite Jacques' claims that she(Toni Morrison)'s a joke-writer...) having finished everything that i *had* to finish early, i went to bed early (a little after 11)...i took some Ny-Quil 'cuz my nose was mildly stuffy...i was barely able to wake up this morning...i was fucking dead the first few hours of the day...i guess the medicine was still being effective over 9 hours later...after class i checked to see how much money i had in the bank (aprox. $44) and went to Consignment to pay off part of ($40) the bass i have on layaway...the 30 days of layaway end the 11th...i hope i can get it out in time...$130 is left...then i went to Martin Music out in Cordova 'cuz they're having this contest where 6 ppl or so get drawn to throw a guitar and the person who can throw it the farthest wins a guitar...i wrote my name on some card and hopefully i'll win end up winning (though doubtfully...) my main problem now is i have to be there monday at 1 and i have class then...we're just doing group presentations and my group's is on wed. so maybe i can get out of it for my slim chance at a free guitar...then i came home and i've just been sitting here and i watched that show that i always watch like the little nerd that i am...

i'm a hick

yay, a boy read toni morrison and didn't sneer. (smile) i haven't read beloved, only song of soloman, jazz, and the bluest eye. she isn't a joke writer. i'm always skeptical when i start reading books that so many young female teachers drill into you as the answer to dead englishmen (ie, i can't read nikki giovanni without at times feeling fed up; tag me a racist if you will), but...she really is good at times. the bluest eye is an amazing piece of writing. mm. lucille clifton and her screw open my eyes. wide.

i miss the simpsons.

i never found out how your burroughs project went. i've never read half of the titles you mentioned, nor even heard of them. i only knew about junky, interzone, naked lunch of course, and that cat book. :) i've been reading a lot of huncke and celine instead. hmmm...

dadadodo is based on the cut up method.

i'm rambling. :/ sorry.

you never found out because it hasn't...yet...we give the presentation or whatever next wednesday...we haven't met or discussed in months though we just had a brief discussion after class today (as well as a few emails that didn't say anything over the weekend) and are meeting at the library tomorrow at like 1 or so...and we're only doing it on Naked Lunch (of course) so...i dunno...

as for Toni Morrison, while i doubt she'll ever be one of my very favorites, i did like Beloved a lot...though the middle of the first half did drag a bit...but once everything starts snowballing together it starts to rule...and there's lots of very powerful, graphic details throughout, which is something i find to be quite ace...i dunno...i've never even heard of the other person you were talking about...that's all i can think of to say for now...

um. i thought that beloved was icky.

my mother suggested it, she's a fan. and it was icky.

icky.

just so you know.

just out of curiosity, what makes you say that?

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] risingentropy.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i just didn't like it very much. like, i was unimpressed. it was weird. amd when i finished, i was like, 'oh. um. okay.'

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
but what about it was "icky"?

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] risingentropy.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
sex with cows. i think.

or just lots of sex in general.

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
the sex w/ cows was only mentioned in like one part...and there wasn't LOTS of sex, in the typical sense...you're just a weenie...

[identity profile] risingentropy.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
too true, but that's beside the point.

sex with cows and dead people is bad.

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
ummm...there's no sex w/ dead ppl...

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] risingentropy.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
well. she's sort of dead.

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
she WAS dead before...but not then...then she has life again...you're just trying to put stuff there that's not there! you're bad!

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] risingentropy.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, come on, it's still gross! even if she managed to get herself reanimated, it's weird. and he's all old. and dating her mother.

Re: i'm a hick

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
some things are "gross"...and it's not like it went into any cheesy detail...it just happened...or something...besides, it's a perfect example displaying Beloved's controlling of everyone and Paul D.'s submissive dehumanization...

i appreciate that you appreciated the book, but i didn't.

and it's not that i viewed in an immature fashion. some of the depictions of sexual acts put me off. i'm allowed that feeling.

i just didn't like it.

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
that was fast...

and, why?: because it's wrong!

ooh-hoo! very nice, isn't that, ladies and gentlemen?

you see, gentle audience, robert's opinion is the opinion, and you'd be a fool and a communist to refute it.

[identity profile] ateolf.livejournal.com 2000-11-28 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
hrm...i don't know about communist, but now that you mention it, it's a very good possibility...not necessarily a proof, as w/ being a fool, but a high candidate for alarm...
