Catching Up

So I'll get back to the shows. I already mentioned Body Futures. Tijuana Hercules actually fulfilled my wish of a set that consisted of one song. They were kinda bluesy but jammy in a good way. They had a few drummers up there (one playing a full kit and a couple others playing individual toms). I was really into what they were doing, anyway. Cinder Cone were incredible. Another band of just two guys (drums and guitar and one of 'em singing, but I forget who). They were pretty Shellac-y, though not as completely derivative as the whole PRF-thing might have you believe. They were plenty rockin' and noisey. Of course, I already know Whales, but they were even better than last year. I enjoyed Electric Hawk. We watched their set through the window from the sidewalk outside. You could hear pretty well out there. They're pretty metal, but just the right dose or something. Helen Money was phenomenal. I'd heard a song of hers on the internet before and liked it. She was great live. Cello with some metal goodness or whatever. The whole weekend was just a barrage of damn shows. Of course, they weren't all great or good. And even if they were, all those hours can be overload, of course. But the experience as a whole was pretty incredible. And just the feeling of goodwill from everyone there. It was just a pleasant environment (really, not something you'd expect from an event that originated from a fuckin' internet message board). It was pretty fantastic to be a part of the whole thing. We left during Cheer Accident's set and decided we wanted to do something so we got some late pizza at Chicago's. Parking was much easier than the previous night, as I'd predicted.

It was pretty late when we got in, but I continued my tradition of being well rested. We got to sleep in Monday anyway. Though for once I was the first awake and getting ready. I woke up after 11. So time is passing as the other dudes got ready and we went and got the cars and brought 'em around and loaded the gear. We picked up Devin who was staying to the south of us. Went back farther up north to drop the keys off with the kind fella who let us crash at his place. By this time it's around or after 2:30. So we hit the road. It takes over an hour just to get out of the fucking city of Chicago. The drive back was fine (we even got to eat at Culver's), but naturally we got in pretty late, after midnight.

Had to get up early Tuesday morning to start my common core class I'm going to all the rest of this week (earlier, I had thought it'd be a couple hours each day, but 8-4 every dern day). Having gotten in and sleeping so late the night before I was really tired yesterday. The class has been just fine otherwise. Our instructor's good (and I'm not just saying that because his wife is probably reading this). I've actually been participating a lot, which is a rare thing for me. During lunch yesterday, I tried to go Saigruha (my favorite Indian place) since I was kinda in the area, but there was a sign taped up saying "closed today." Trying to find somewhere else to eat, I ended up at 4 Kings Gourmet Burgers & Wings. They were okay, though you could tell they were new and desperate. The guy there asked me if I liked Five Guys. I said yeah and he wanted to know how they compared to them. Sadly, Five Guys is better (not that I told him that, I just said their burger was good). I had wanted to go to the gym yesterday after work, but I was too damn tired. I ended up napping (planned to sleep for an hour, but Mary Beth said she couldn't wake me up and I slept two hours). I went to the gym after class today instead. Keep feeling like I'm regressing when I miss any days out of town (and I only missed one day this time).

Oh, a couple more things before I forget. Those shirts we made for the show...didn't sell any. And we only sold two cds (one of each of the ones we brought). The other guys seemed pretty disappointed, I wasn't too surprised. I was also really stupid and forgot to get a gift bag before I left. Hopefully I didn't miss out on anything too awesome. Oh, and Begin by Gathering Supplies gave out free cds and I got one, but I don't know where it is. I might have put it in Jacques's car. They were pretty good live (I think their set got better with each song more or less), but that cd had a really stupid name anyway. If it turns up again fine, if not whatever. Okay, I think I'm done now. No I'm not! I almost forgot karaoke. I had put in my song a couple months ago and got to sing "Baby's on Fire!" It was fun, the video had people spraying each other at a car wash for the long guitar solo. Having sung "Battle Chant" earlier, my vocal prowess was not up to par and I was incapable of making any high notes happen, so it wasn't my best karaoke performance, but it was still fun. Everyone in the band sang and after Ryan was done, the guy who runs it said "and that ends The Family Ghost collection." I guess we're the only band so into karaoke.
