Six Flags

Friday night Mary Beth and I went to the Orpheum to see This Is Spinal Tap. A movie that is, of course, always fucking funny. It was a perfectly gorgeous evening and afterwards we just walked all the way up and down downtown enjoying it. I don't know if it was because of all that was going on that particular night (the movie, the zombie walk, some "trolley art" thing, a Redbirds game, just a nice late spring weekend) but downtown felt lively. Also it seems that there are more business downtown on Main St. than there used to be. I'm not downtown too much these days, but it would be nice if it ends up being much less dead than it used to be. We ended our date on the "new" patio at Huey's (back in midtown).

Saturday morning was our trip to Six Flags with my parents and nephew. We all rode up together in my dad's suv. We stayed at this Holiday Inn resort thing that's right next door to the park. Mary Beth and I hit the sauna, swimming pool, and hot tub that night. In the morning we went to the park. We went first, because my dad was holding Jason because he wouldn't eat breakfast. We started on the ferris wheel. I had to do a bit of convincing and soothing to get her on it and a few of the other rides we rode together. Though she did very well and even jumped in on her own accord on a couple things I didn't think she would. We rode a few things with my family. Jason hated Thunder River (the rapids one). I was sitting next to him and had to comfort him the whole time. He thought it was scary. He apparently liked the log flume until the drop at the end which he hated but then liked again after it was over. I've always disliked spinny rides, but I agreed to get on the Shazam ride (formerly called something else before the DC comics whore-out) but I thought it was a ton of fun. Sorry to my wife on whom centrifugal force smothered with my body. Jason liked that one too. Then Jason saw the Scooby-Doo themed ride and while we were still in line waiting for it was saying it was his favorite ride. He changed his mind at the end, though. It was a "haunted swamp" and he hated it and thought it was scary. Then Mary Beth and I parted ways from the rest of the family. She coaxed me to go on the Superman one. I probably would not have done it on my own initiative. It just takes you straight up really really fucking high and then drops you down. It was kinda fun, kinda fucking freaky. She, of course, didn't ride it. Then we started to work our way around. My favorite was the Screaming Eagle rollercoaster. I rode it by myself. No loops or anything, it just went really fast. We both rode the Sky Screamer, which takes you up pretty high on a swing that spins around. Aside from the being high up, it's pretty tame, it's not fast or anything. It had started with me in line by myself, but she changed her mind and came along in a little bit. We both went on the ride that makes a super-huge fucking splash. That was fun. Then, when it's over, you can stand on the bridge as the next ride splashes down and get splashed again. So we did. And as stupid as that is, it was the funnest part. I took a break to wring my socks out. Then we rode together the tamer of the rollercoasters. She wasn't sure about it, but she finally went along. Then I tried the Ninja on my own. This was my first upside-down flipping of the day. It was fun, but I did get to feeling a little nasueous afterwards. There was this younger girl behind me kinda freaking out to who she was with about not thinking she wanted to go on it. Then in the middle she started screaming about how much she loved it and after it was over wanted to stay on and ride again. We hadn't eaten in a good while so we took a break from lunch while my head caught up. Afterwards I was feeling a little better so I went on the Batman rollercoaster. It also flips upside-down a lot. It was a lot of fun, but I got to feeling really really fucking nauseous. We took a break and I sat on a bench for a long time not really being able to move. I took some dramamine but ended up needing to cut out early so we went back to the hotel so I could lay down. Now I remember why I avoided rollercoasters with loops when I was younger. I had been thinking it was 'cuz I was too weinery or scared or something, but now I remember it was 'cuz they make me feel sick. It had been a long time. It's a shame 'cuz they were a lot of fun. One awesome thing about Sunday: since it was Memorial Day weekend we were expecting it'd be really fucking crowded at Six Flags, but it wasn't! I mean, lines were almost non-existent. We barely had to wait for anything. It was pretty great. The park wasn't dead-feeling either, it was just at that perfect place, I guess. I feel kinda silly 'cuz I went into it thinking going to the amusement park was gonna be kind've a lame thing to spend my summer doing, but ended up having a lot of fun (aside from the getting sick at the end of it). Well, we headed back yesterday and that brings us up to date.
