Show + Arts + Etc.
So I played a show at Goner Records opening for Chris Corsano on Friday night! It was pretty exciting and I think it went alright, thought I was a bit nervous and I was having a little bit of a cold sickness catching up to me. Mostly just that cough that I had hoped was getting under control Friday morning, well it wasn't getting under control. But I loaded up on dayquil and cough suppressant so that got me through the night. I also masked up for the show and mostly stayed shy and a bit away from other people so hopefully I didn't spread it around to anyone else. I had my Pearl Syncussion drum pads (just the pads, not the synth itself) triggering my modular and had some stuff going on with that. The bass drum module that I said in my last post wasn't working properly anymore after feeding back through the distortion loop, well, as of Friday the distortion feedback loop wasn't making any sound either. It wasn't a big deal as it was just a minor extra sound tacked on, but still that's kind of a bummer that it's working even less than before. I guess I need to get that module repaired at some point. Speaking of...my Rubicon, my main oscillator, it's always had issues where it takes a while to work correctly after being turned on. Well, it seems lately it takes longer and longer sometimes for it to get to where it works correctly. And on Friday it took a very long time, but then it seemed like it kept going back and forth once it did start responding between correct and incorrect behavior. I can still finagle sounds from it when it isn't working correctly, but it takes more knob twiddling and more work. Anyway, I was just rolling with it during the show. Chris Corsano played and his set was awesome. Drums and prepared drums. He has half a clarinet with a soprano sax mouthpiece he makes blowing sounds with. He has cello strings across drums he makes bowing sounds with. And drums and stuff. Good show!
Work up early yesterday and went to Theatre Memphis and the Dixon for their Women in the Arts day. I took some more cough stuff to not be disruptive and masked up again. We started at Theatre Memphis and saw a scene from The Glass Menagerie. Then we went over to the Dixon for this panel discussion on "gender expression in art" that was really good. Then in the galleries, there was a monologue dramatic performance from Cazateatro. Then we hopped back over to Theatre Memphis for a panel on "dance and choreography". While leaving Mary Beth noticed the menu for one of the food trucks that looked really good with lots of stuff with duck and so we ordered a bunch of their food. But, uh, she had gone ahead and I was coming outside to catch back up with her and I was looking for her and right there on the patio where the entrance steps are a wide curve, my foot missed a step and I did a fall. And it was one of those things where in slow motion, right in the middle of it, I start stumbling and I'm thinking how I must look really stupid and ridiculous wobbling all goofy like that and then realizing, oh shit, I'm not done, and then proceeding to fly over completely sprawled out and as clumsy and ridiculous as possible. The good news is I caught myself on my hands, the bad news is that I scraped my left hand up pretty bad. Luckily Mary Beth has hand sanitizer on hand, but I'm all bleeding a bit while we're waiting for our food. At least the food was really delicious. The food truck has a really generic name: Good Groceries, but was really good. Their website says they're trying to get a permanent location. That'd be cool. Barbecue duck nachos, duck confit mango sandwich, brisket lettuce and tomato sandwich (some of the things we had!). Then we went back home and I bandaged myself up a bit and then proceeded to just crash and sleep for a few hours through the afternoon. I woke up in the evening but didn't do a whole lot through the rest of the day. I think I needed that catch up after pushing myself a bit. Then I took nyquil and just slept a super long time through this morning. Am still better and wasn't coughing at all when I first woke up, but after getting up I am still coughing a little bit. Hopefully I'm past the worst of it. But now Mary Beth is coming down with it.
