Xmas Hatt
Yesterday Mary Beth and I got some pizza from Little Italy starting from lunch and continuing through the day (and into today and maybe beyond!). The one downtown didn't open til 2 so we drove out to the one in Bartlett and took it back home and ate it while watching Moonstruck (which was pretty good but it's hard to get over Nicholas Cage acting like Nicholas Cage in about any movie). Then later at night I went to a show at the Lamplighter. It was an incredible show, but I was a little bummed because I was the only one there that wasn't attached to the show (performing or significant other or working or whatever). First it was W1ND0W and they had their friend Julia (I think I'm remembering the name right) playing drums and that was good. Next it was Janet Xmas and her set was incredible. She had a couple cassette players (including a pink walkman-type one) and she had some pretty awesome textures going (at one point that "All That She Wants" Ace of Base song played (which was about the only "musical" part) but it was maybe slowed down a little and distorted a bit and I didn't even recognize that's what it was until I played Mary Beth the clip from my phone later). (Oh and I should throw in that Janet collaborates in a project with Chelsea Bridge.) Next it was Bobb Hatt and he had a kinetic noise set with feedback and saxophone and pedals. He turned off all the room lights and had a green stage light he'd brought with him and he moved around in a kind of modern ballet sort of thing. It was really loud and noisy and incredible. He played through speakers he had and one was on stage behind him but then one was a bit across the room behind the audience. I didn't even realize the one was behind us at first until a bit into his set and I'm all, the sound seems like it's coming from more than one direction, how is he doing that? Then turn around and, oh yeah, there's a big speaker back there too! He told me later he had the signal split and one channel went through a pitch shifter. It was a cool effect. Last it was Noir Walls (Lamplighter Chuck's synth project) and that was good. I just wish there had been more people there to check out those great performances. I picked up some t-shirts from the artists after the show. That's about it.
