A Day about Town

It was my last consecutive Friday off yesterday, and we made it a very action-packed day. It started off by going to get a whole bunch of rib sandwiches from Payne's. Took 'em back home and we ate them and it was delicious. I got a few cds in the mail: Windy Weber: I Hate People, Windy & Carl: Allegiance and Conviction, and Windy & Carl: Songs for the Broken Hearted. Then Mary Beth and I went downtown. We had a plan of riding the Riverfront line. As it's a scenic sort of thing, it only has one trolley running at a time on it and in theory it's supposed to run every forty minutes. We waited over an hour but still didn't see any sign of it. We saw a bunch on the Main Street line go by, and seeing how erratic their timing was (in theory run every twelve minutes, but would go over twenty and then see a bunch almost back-to-back) we figured the Riverfront one also wouldn't be exact. But it got to the point where if it took any longer we wouldn't be able to do the other thing we had planned (compounded with if it took so long to get to us, it would take at least just as long on the ride) and also the uncertainty of if it would even come at all. So we gave that up. But it was fine, it wasn't even a bad time waiting around hanging out on Main Street, the weather was nice and everything.

After that we went to the Dixon. It was very nice with the aforementioned weather. We first walked around the gardens. We came back to the end of the big field when I happened to see Oliver across the little ditch and bridge, looking up into the foliage and/or at a statue. We just stood back and admired him a while (oh yeah, this is the cat that "works" at the Dixon now). After a little bit he suddenly jerked his head around in that surprised cat way and noticed us looking at him. I wasn't expecting it, but he went across the bridge towards us and as he got closer he started bounding towards us. So we got to give him a whole bunch of pets and he was very cuddly so that was a pretty awesome part of the day! Then this group of wedding photo people started coming by and Oliver got wary. He kind of walked towards them but then bolted into the ditch to slink away. Well, I guess I feel chosen now! Then we went into the Dixon to check out the exhibit. It's called Black Artists in America: From Civil Rights to the Bicentennial. It's as it says, a selection of art from black artists in the 60s and 70s. It leaned abstract and it was very exceptional. They always put on great exhibits there and this was one of the best. I kept taking all these photos and it was hard not to just take pictures of just about everything. I noticed they had kept two of the Zao Wou-Ki vases from that exhibit earlier this year that was also so good, donated to their permanent collection. They're really good ones too so that's awesome.

After a little bit after that we went back out to a couple things. First it was to an art exhibit at Medicine Factory. Jimmy, who did the crt video installation at Memphis Concrète this year, had some stuff in it. So it was pretty cool, seeing that and the other art. After that we went to a show at the Hi-Tone. It ended up being crazy packed. First it was the first show of Decoration Policy, but its members are well-known people from other bands. They were rock, kinda postpunk, but they had really nice noisy guitar textures. Next it was Big Clown, and I got into it. I hadn't really gotten into them much in the past, but I think seeing them live again was a good boon. They even did a cover of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (and I'd had (still have) The Razors Edge playing in my car so I guess that's kinda funny). Last it was this band over from the UK called Powerplant. They were pretty good. Under the surface it was just kinda straightforward garage rock. They had some synth (guy playing a Prophet 08 but it had tape over the branding like he didn't want you to know that but you could see through the tape anyway so not sure what all that's about). I mean, the synth either mostly was being relatively straightforward too. But they were pretty good. People seemed to be flipping out over them and I didn't see the cause for that, though.
